Virtual Education Is Here to Stay: DOLE’s Success Story

Corporate

Unity is strength. Amid the uncertainty and chaos brought on by the pandemic, the companies that continued operating joined forces and found solutions. Creating jobs and offering remote training became one of the most successful initiatives.

The changes triggered by the start of the pandemic reshaped the world of work. Companies that kept moving forward took a leap of faith by saying yes to the new normal. Two years later, we see success stories like Dole’s, proving that virtual classes are effective.

The natural way we now use screens and smart devices wasn’t the same before the health emergency. Today, we understand that they’re tools for work, entertainment, and learning. Just a few years ago, only 5% of our corporate clients invested in virtual training through Idioma Internacional. Today, 100% of our clients use this model in one form or another.

A transition to a 100% virtual model

During the pandemic, with Dole’s approval, we transitioned all their employee classes to a fully virtual format. At that time, our experience and preparation were critical to making this decision, as virtual programs had long been part of our offering—even before the pandemic. We already knew the strengths and limitations of this model and how to make the most of it. We also highlight Dole’s proactive attitude in trusting their employees and choosing to adapt to the new reality. This made the transition and the integration of technology into the teaching model smooth and familiar. Employees felt supported and were highly motivated to continue their training.

For over 7 years, Dole and Idioma Internacional have worked hand in hand to train their employees. Thanks to the company’s trust, since transitioning to a fully virtual model, classes have continued in this format—not just due to the context, but because multiple success indicators have improved, and student satisfaction remains high.

According to internal studies, since moving to a fully virtual model, Idioma Internacional has experienced increased engagement from students, clients, and instructors—largely due to better use of technology by all parties. Additionally, process optimization allows for constant updates to platforms and learning tool s, proving that education doesn’t need to be in-person to be effective.

More graduates, better results

Two years after fully transitioning to online classes—and after reviewing the results not only from Dole but hundreds of other graduates—we can confidently affirm the success of Idioma Internacional’s virtual programs for future students.

The benefits of learning English remotely go beyond convenience. When analyzing the data, two key metrics were used to measure student performance and commitment:
1) Grades, based on oral and written evaluations, assignments, and progress in the virtual learning system. 2) Attendance records. The experience showed that virtual English classes are highly effective: both attendance and academic performance improved by up to 5% across the entire student population. This combination has allowed teachers to observe significant progress in participants’ fluency, which translates into greater confidence and ease when communicating in English.

Another factor highly valued by students is exposure to teachers from different countries, which allows them to experience various accents throughout their learning journey. Thanks to the virtual format, Idioma Internacional has brought on instructors from all over the world—from the U.S. and Canada to South Africa and the U.K. This enriches not only students’ language proficiency but also their cultural knowledge, enhancing their ability to communicate with English speakers from around the globe.

“Students are definitely more motivated, which leads to better use of the program. We have satisfied clients who’ve also been able to open more groups with diverse audiences.” – Brian Logan, General Manager, Idioma Internacional

Technology to enrich the teaching-learning process

According to student surveys, the flexibility offered by the virtual format allows them to make better use of their time both inside and outside of class.
Most students highlight that being able to connect from anywhere and not having to commute has helped them attend more frequently and with a better attitude. They also emphasize the use of technological tools. For them, having access to a virtual learning platform or LMS (Learning Management System) and other 24/7 tools is a major advantage, as it allows them to review what they’ve learned and practice more before, during, and after class sessions.

Dole students, like all students at Idioma Internacional, have access to an LMS where they can review all the material covered in class and access additional resources to deepen their knowledge.
Likewise, during lessons, instructors make use of activities and tools that make the learning experience more dynamic.

Today, we can confidently say that virtual English classes are effective, convenient, engaging, and in no way inferior to traditional classrooms of 2019 and earlier.
On the contrary, the improvement in key success indicators allows us to affirm that they actually enhance the learning experience for those aiming to achieve academic and professional success through mastery of a second language.
